Earlier this month, we packed up some of our favourite gear and headed back to Farlingaye High School for a brilliant morning of talks as part of their fantastic careers engagement programme. After having such a great time at their jobs fair last year, we were absolutely delighted to be invited back—this time to chat with the students about a superpower that underpins everything we do in film and video production: communication.

Over the course of the morning, we gave four talks to groups of incredibly enthusiastic pupils. We shared a few behind-the-scenes insights into how clear communication plays a vital role in every single aspect of our industry—from the director calling the shots to the camera team capturing the action, and everyone in between.

Why Clear Communication is a Real-World Superpower

We love a good chat, but on a busy film set, great communication is everything. We spoke to the students about how keeping everyone on the same page does a few amazing things:

  • Speeds up the process (crucial when you're chasing the perfect sunlight!).

  • Keeps everyone safe around heavy, expensive equipment.

  • Makes the set a much happier, more enjoyable place to work.

But the biggest takeaway we wanted to leave with them is that good communication isn’t just for filmmakers. It’s a vital life skill for any job, and for everyday life—whether they're collaborating with classmates on a school project, chatting with teachers, or catching up with family.

Bringing the Set to the Classroom

Of course, we couldn't just stand there and give a lecture—we’re video people, we like action! To bring the concept to life, we ran a fun, hands-on activity where the students were assigned different film crew roles.

They had to communicate exactly how we do on a live, professional set—relaying messages from department to department, working together until the whole room was officially "ready to shoot." It was brilliant to watch them embrace the challenge and experience first-hand how vital clear, purposeful teamwork really is.

To sweeten the deal, we also brought along some of our pro film-making kit, giving the students a chance to get hands-on with a real cinema camera. There’s nothing quite like getting behind a proper lens to spark a bit of real-world curiosity and creativity!

Giving Back to Our Local Community

At Offset Films, we are deeply passionate about storytelling, and for us, a big part of that means supporting the next generation as they begin writing their own stories. We absolutely loved being part of such an inspiring morning. As we celebrate a decade in business, we always welcome the opportunity to give back to the wonderful local Suffolk community that has supported us over the last 10 years.

A massive thank you to the staff and students at Farlingaye High School for having us—we had a blast, and we'll see you again soon!
