Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of heading back to Farlingaye High School for a morning of talks as part of their careers engagement programme. Following our attendance at their jobs fair last year, we were delighted to be invited back—this time to speak to students about a subject that underpins everything we do in film and video production: communication.

Over the course of the morning, we gave four talks to groups of enthusiastic pupils, sharing insights into how communication plays a vital role in every aspect of our industry—from the director calling the shots to the camera team capturing the action, and everyone in between. We explored how the good communication on set can speed up the process, avoid accidents and make a set a more enjoyable place to work. We spoke about how good communication is not just vital in film making, but in any job. In fact, it's important in everyday life, whether working with classmates on a project or talking with teachers and family.

To bring it all to life, we ran a fun, hands-on activity where the students were each given different film crew roles. They had to communicate just as we would on a live set—relaying messages from department to department, ultimately building up to a full set being “ready to shoot.” It was brilliant to see them embrace the challenge and experience first-hand how vital clear, purposeful communication is.

We also brought along some of our filmmaking kit, giving students a chance to try their hand with a cinema camera—because nothing beats a bit of real-world tech to spark curiosity and creativity!

At Offset Films, we’re passionate about storytelling, and part of that means supporting the next generation as they begin writing their own stories. We loved being part of this inspiring morning and always welcome the opportunity to give back to the local community that has supported us over the past 10 years.

Thanks again to Farlingaye High School for having us—we’ll see you again soon!
