The Big Question: How Long Does It Actually Take to Make a Video?

Here at Offset Films, one of the most common questions we get asked is:
“If we want to have a video made, how long is it going to take?”
It’s an incredibly important question to ask, especially if you have a specific launch date in mind. Whether you're planning a festive Christmas promotion or a scorching summer sale, timing is everything. Dropping your video content right as the season approaches is the best way to build awareness and drive sales.
To make sure your video hits the world at the perfect moment, the secret is simple: you have to work backwards.
Breaking Down the Timeline Step-by-Step
A great video doesn't happen overnight, but it also shouldn't take forever. For a standard 3-minute business overview film, the process generally breaks down into three main phases.
1. Post-Production & Revisions (Allow 3 Weeks)
Once the cameras stop rolling, the magic happens in the editing room.
The Initial Edit (2 weeks): It takes time to sift through the footage, select the best takes, piece the story together, adjust the audio, and colour-grade the visuals.
The Review Buffer (1 week): Once we send you the first draft, you’ll probably want to show it to your team, stakeholders, or even a few trusted customers to make sure the message lands perfectly. Building in an extra week ensures that any final tweaks or notes can be implemented smoothly without any panic.
Because of this, we always recommend aiming to have your shoot day at least 3 weeks before your ideal launch deadline.

2. The Shoot Day & Safety Buffers (Allow 1 Week)
Getting everyone together for a shoot takes a bit of coordination. When you're planning around busy staff, clients, or specific locations, it’s always wise to give yourself a little breathing room. If someone wakes up ill on the day of the shoot, having a small buffer allows us to reschedule or pick up extra shots without derailing your entire campaign.

3. Pre-Production & Planning (Allow 1–2 Weeks)
What are we actually filming on the day? This is where the foundation is laid.
Scripting & Shot Listing: A well-written script and a clear shot list make our film crew incredibly efficient on set. It ensures we capture exactly what’s needed to convey your message accurately.
Logistics: We map out the schedule based on who is available, which products we need to cover, and when certain locations are free.
From the first script draft to mapping out every location and subject, this planning phase typically takes a week or two.

The Verdict: When Should You Get in Touch?
When you add up the planning, the shooting, the editing, and the feedback loops, the maths becomes pretty clear.
📅 The Golden Rule: Look ahead to the exact date you want to release your video. Work backwards from that date by 4 to 6 weeks, and that is your ideal time to hit send on that email to your local film production company.
Giving your project this 4-to-6-week window takes the stress out of the process, ensures everyone has fun on set, and—most importantly—results in a beautiful, high-quality video that your audience will love.
