Over a decade ago, in 2013, a devastating fire tore through this beloved local landmark, leaving the village in absolute shock. But what followed wasn't the end of the story—it was the beginning of an inspiring community movement.
As a local video production company, we have had the absolute privilege of documenting the step-by-step restoration of the very last pub in Wickham Market.
Here is a look behind the scenes of this remarkable project and how visual storytelling is helping preserve local history.
A Village United: The Heart of Wickham Market
When the fire consumed The George, the village lost more than just a building; they lost their central social hub. Refusing to let their shared history vanish, the resilient residents of Wickham Market banded together with a single, passionate goal: to raise the funds needed to buy and rebuild their beloved pub.
From local fundraisers to incredibly generous donations, the community proved that while a fire can destroy bricks and mortar, it can never erase the neighbourhood’s spirit of togetherness.

Because the project received vital financial backing from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, properly documenting this journey was an essential requirement. The Architectural Vision: Purcell Architects
We sat down with the talented team at Purcell, the architects tasked with balancing historical preservation with modern usability.
Using old records, they have meticulously recreated the classic features that made the pub a landmark in the first place. But they’ve also designed it for the 2026 community. The restored building features:
A vibrant traditional pub space on the ground floor.
A brand-new accessible lift, ensuring everyone can navigate the building comfortably.
A flexible upstairs community space dedicated to local residents for everything from fitness classes to baby groups.
Uncovering Hidden Stories: Archaeological Insights
We also had the pleasure of filming an interview with local archaeological consultant Robin Nielsen. Robin walked us through the fascinating layers of history hidden within the pub's structure, showing us how the building has evolved over the centuries to reflect changing trends in British pub culture. Understanding these historical roots gives the new building a deep, grounding sense of purpose.
