Last month, Offset Films had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Chisato Minamimura, a remarkable Deaf performance artist and choreographer. This enriching experience not only showcased Chisato's artistic talents but also highlighted the power of storytelling through diverse perspectives. In this blog post, we explore Chisato's background, her current project, and her unique approach to choreography that celebrates Deaf artistry and cultural history.
Who is Chisato Minamimura?
Chisato Minamimura is a Deaf performance artist and BSL (British Sign Language) art guide based in London. Originally from Japan, she brings a global lens to her work, having created, performed, and taught in over 15 countries. With her extensive training at Trinity Laban in London and degrees in Japanese Painting and an MA from Yokohama National University, Chisato flawlessly blends traditional art forms with modern performance techniques.

Her innovative choreography is grounded in her experiences as a Deaf artist, which allows her to explore the visual qualities of sound. This creative exploration has led to impactful performances, such as aerial work with the Graeae Theatre Company, and significant roles in the Paralympic Opening Ceremonies in London (2012) and Rio (2016).
Chisato's contributions have attracted attention and support from notable organizations, including Arts Council England and the British Council. Her work has been featured in major media outlets, establishing her as a clear influence in the contemporary performing arts scene.
A New Artistic Venture: Documenting Cultural History
Currently, Chisato is immersed in a groundbreaking project documenting the history of Chinese foot binding, an ancient practice that has sparked significant debate and discussion. This initiative aims to challenge conventional beauty standards and explore the intersections of culture and personal identity.
The project utilises innovative green screen technology to create immersive performances. Zoe, a deaf artist will perform under Chisato's direction, with the piece signed in both British Sign Language and Chinese Sign Language. It will also be translated into spoken word, broadening its accessibility. This multi-layered approach not only honors the historical context of foot binding but also expands how performance art can tell complex stories about identity.

The Power of Deaf Artistry in Cultural Narratives
Chisato's work challenges us to reframe our understanding of communication, storytelling, and movement. By engaging with rich cultural histories, she elevates narratives from marginalised communities that might often go unnoticed.
Her performances invite audiences to experience stories through a different lens—one that is visually rich and emotionally resonant. By incorporating digital technology into her choreography, Chisato demonstrates how performance art can transcend barriers, connecting with diverse audiences and igniting discussions around essential themes.
The integration of British and Chinese sign languages into her current project not only enhances communication but also celebrates cultural diversity. This approach ensures that the performance resonates with a broader spectrum of individuals, creating shared experiences that extend beyond mere entertainment.
